Fashion plate, from Le Petit Courrier des Dames

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from a scrap album containing a selection of 19th century plates. The plate is from Le Petit Courrier des Dames, a weekly fashion magazine published in Paris. Dated 13 October, 1860, the plate illustrates an evening dress and day dress.

The dress skirts are enormous, supported by the artificial crinoline or hooped cage which had been introduced early in 1856. The plate is signed, 'Pauquet' and 'Gervais'.

A Pauquet also produced drawings for Le Journal des Demoiselles and The Queen. Other artists who contributed to Le Petit Courrier de Dames were A de Taverne, Laure Noël, Hervy and Madame de Closmenil.
