Fashion plate, The London and Paris Fashions for June 1849

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from a scrap album containing a selection of 19th century plates. The plate is entitled, 'The London and Paris Fashions for June 1849'.

The bottom half of the plate shows two women in day dresses and bonnets and one woman in an evening dress. The top half illustrates two half figures of women in day dresses and bonnets with two lace bonnets in between.

Many nineteenth century fashion plates were destroyed during World War II, especially those in the fine German collections. The British Museum also lost a considerable proportion of its collection of fashion magazines during this time.
