Fashion plate, from Le Petit Courrier des Dames

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from a scrap album containing a selection of 19th century plates. The plate is from Le Petit Courrier des Dames, a weekly fashion magazine published in Paris. Dated 10 May, 1844, it illustrates two day dresses with bonnets.

Both women are holding lace handkerchiefs. Stiffened petticoats of crinoline (horsehair) would have helped to swell their dome-shaped dress skirts.

Le Petit Courrier des Dames (1822-65) included one or two fashion plates with each weekly issue. The plates are not usually signed but the styles of the better known artists are easily recognisable and identified.
