Fashion plate, from Le Petit Courrier des Dames

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from a scrap album containing a selection of 19th century plates. The plate is from Le Petit Courrier des Dames, a weekly fashion magazine published in Paris. Dated 20 October, 1841, it illustrates a woman's satin mantle.

A mantle is a loose, sleeveless cloak or cape. This long, fur-trimmed example is shown from the front and back, in two different colours. The bonnet is made of African velvet.

Le Petit Courrier des Dames (1822-65) included one or two fashion plates with each weekly issue. The plates are not usually signed but the styles of the better known artists are easily recognisable and identified.
