Fashion plate, from Le Petit Courrier des Dames

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from a scrap album containing a selection of 19th century plates. The plate is from Le Petit Courrier des Dames, a weekly fashion magazine published in Paris. Dated 10 December, 1840, it illustrates a woman's velvet mantle.

A mantle is a loose, sleeveless cloak or cape. This long, ermine-trimmed example is shown from the front and back, in two different colours. The outfit includes a matching ermine muff - a cylindrical covering of fur into which the hands were placed for warmth.

Among the artists who contributed to this magazine were E Préval, A de Taverne, Laure Noël and Hervy. These artists all drew for a series of magazines which had their editorial offices at No 1 Boulevard des Italiens, Paris.
