Fashion plate, from Le Petit Courrier des Dames

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from a scrap album containing a selection of 19th century fashion plates. The plate is from Le Petit Courrier des Dames, a weekly fashion magazine published in Paris. Dated 31 May, 1835, it illustrates day wear for men.

Designed by Bouchez and engraved by Damours, the plate's title is, 'Toilettes de printemps' - outfits for spring. Both men are wearing frock coats, trousers and waistcoats.

Many of the plates issued by Le Petit Courrier des Dames were for male fashion. In the 19th century, young men who followed fashion and indulged themselves in more outrageous clothes were known as 'dandies' or 'swells'.
