Fashion plate, possibly from The World of Fashion

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from a scrap album containing a selection of 19th century fashion plates. The plate may possibly be from The World of Fashion, a magazine published in London. It is entitled, 'Parisian Coifurres' and was engraved by W. Alais.

The plate shows ten examples of hairstyles, with various hats and head dresses. In each case, the hair is parted in the centre with tight curls around the forehead. Loops of plaits are arranged high on the head or ringlets hang down the back.

The World of Fashion was in publication from 1824 until 1891. Its plates were slightly larger than others of the time and they generally contained up to six figures. William Wolfe Alais produced good quality plates for this magazine during its early years of publication.
