Fashion plate, from The Repository of Arts

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from a scrap album containing a selection of 19th century fashion plates. The plate is from The Repository of Arts, a monthly magazine published in London. Dated 1 October, 1815, it illustrates a walking dress.

The woman is also wearing a large bonnet and has a coloured handkerchief around her neck. White muslin, lawn and silk were very fashionable during this time and were often combined with brightly coloured accessories.

Unlike many of the early fashion magazines, The Repository of Arts maintained a high standard of fashion plate throughout its existence. It was in publication from 1808 until 1829.
