Fashion plate, from The Repository of Arts

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from a scrap album containing a selection of 19th century plates. The plate is from The Repository of Arts, a monthly magazine published in London. Dated 1 July, 1814, it illustrates a white morning dress.

The high-waisted, classically styled dress is typical of the period. White muslin, lawn and silk were very fashionable during this time and were often combined with brightly coloured accessories.

Published by Rudolph Ackermann, the magazine's full title was 'The Repository of Arts, Literature, Commerce, Manufactures, Fashions and Politics' and it was therefore not exclusively a fashion magazine. It was in publication from 1808 until 1829.
