Fashion plate, from The Repository of Arts

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from a scrap album containing a selection of 19th century plates. The plate is from The Repository of Arts, a monthly magazine published in London by Rudolph Ackermann. Dated 1 January, 1821, it illustrates a promenade dress.

The high-waisted dress has a matching wide-brimmed bonnet trimmed with flowers. In her hand, the woman holds a large fur muff - a cylindrical covering of fur into which the hands are placed for warmth.

Unlike many of the early fashion magazines, The Repository of Arts maintained a high standard of fashion plate throughout its existence. It was in publication from 1808 until 1829.
