Fashion plate, from The Repository of Arts

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from a scrap album containing a selection of 19th century plates. The plate is from The Repository of Arts, a monthly magazine published in London by Rudolph Ackermann. Dated 1 October, 1825, it illustrates four types of hat.

The straw hat at the top and the bonnet on the right are both elaborately trimmed with ribbons and flowers. The hat at the foot of the picture is trimmed with feathers.

The magazine's full title was 'The Repository of Arts, Literature, Commerce, Manufactures, Fashions and Politics' and it was therefore not exclusively a fashion magazine. It was in publication from 1808 until 1829.
