Fashion plate, from The Repository of Arts
Add to album

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from a scrap album containing a selection of 19th century plates. The plate is from The Repository of Arts, a monthly magazine published in London by Rudolph Ackermann. Dated 1 October, 1821, it illustrates a court dress.

The dress illustrates how the high waistline, which had been fashionable for twenty years, was slowly beginning to drop to its more natural position from 1820 onwards. At the same time, hats and bonnets were becoming more elaborately trimmed.

Unlike many of the early fashion magazines, The Repository of Arts maintained a high standard of fashion plate throughout its existence. It was in publication from 1808 until 1829.
