Fashion plate, from The Repository of Arts

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from a scrap album containing a selection of 19th century plates. The plate is from The Repository of Arts, a monthly magazine published in London by Rudolph Ackermann. Dated 1 July, 1820, it illustrates a court dress.

The colour white was fashionable at this time and was often combined with brightly coloured accessories. This white dress has colourful trimmings at the hem and is combined with a blue train. The outfit is completed with an elaborate headdress.

The magazine's full title was 'The Repository of Arts, Literature, Commerce, Manufactures, Fashions and Politics' and it was therefore not exclusively a fashion magazine. It was in publication from 1808 until 1829.
