Fashion plate, from The Repository of Arts

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from a scrap album containing a selection of 19th century plates. The plate is from The Repository of Arts, a monthly magazine published in London by Rudolph Ackermann. Dated 1 October, 1814, it illustrates a walking dress.

The figure is drawn with the back facing, in order to give an appreciation of the detail on the back of the dress and the large bonnet. Dress styles at this time were influenced by Greece and Rome with high waistlines and a strong emphasis on the vertical line.

The Repository of Arts was in publication from 1808 until 1829.The total number of plates produced in this time was in the region of 450 and a complete set is very rare.
