Fashion plate, from The Repository of Arts
Add to album

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from a scrap album containing a selection of 19th century plates. The plate is from The Repository of Arts, a monthly magazine published in London by Rudolph Ackermann. Dated July, 1815, it illustrates an evening dress.

The figure is drawn with the back facing, in order to give an appreciation of the back of both the dress and the head dress. Dress styles at this time were influenced by Greece and Rome with high waistlines and a strong emphasis on the vertical line.

The magazine's full title was 'The Repository of Arts, Literature, Commerce, Manufactures, Fashions and Politics' and it was therefore clearly not exclusively a fashion magazine. It was in publication from 1808 until 1829.
