Fashion plate, from The Repository of Arts

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from a scrap album containing a selection of 19th century plates. The plate is from The Repository of Arts, a monthly magazine published in London by Rudolph Ackermann. Dated 1 January, 1813 it illustrates an opera dress.

The dress is typical of the classical style, very popluar at this time and influenced by Greece and Rome. The waistline is high and the skirt falls in folds to the ground with a strong emphasis on the vertical line.

The magazine's full title was 'The Repository of Arts, Literature, Commerce, Manufactures, Fashions and Politics' and it was therefore not exclusively a fashion magazine. It was in publication from 1808 until 1829.
