Fashion plate, from The Gallery of Fashion

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from The Gallery of Fashion, a monthly magazine published in London by Nicolaus Wilhelm von Heideloff, a native of Stuttgart. The plate illustrates a day dress and is dated 1 September, 1796.

The majority of Heideloff's plates represent outdoor scenes with groups of figures shown in different occupations such as carriage driving, singing at the harpsichord, taking tea or strolling on the beach.

The first issue was published in April 1794 with a yearly subscription cost of three guineas. Subscribers included the Princess Royal, The Princess Elizabeth, the Duke of York and the Empress of Germany. Publication ceased in March 1803.
