Fashion plate, from The Gallery of Fashion

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from The Gallery of Fashion, a ladies' monthly magazine published in London by Nicolaus Wilhelm von Heideloff, a native of Stuttgart. The plate illustrates two day dresses and is dated 1 May, 1795.

Originally trained as an engraver, Heideloff migrated to Paris in the 1780s where he earned his living painting miniatures until the outbreak of the French Revolution.

After a period of employment in London with the bookseller, R Ackermann, he started his own publication in April 1794. Each monthly issue contained two fashion plates, beautifully hand coloured and finished with gold and silver tints. Publication ceased in March 1803.
