Fashion plate, from Le Journal des Dames et des Modes

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from Le Journal des Dames et des Modes, a ladies' magazine published in Paris. Dating from 1830, the plate illustrates women's evening wear from a series entitled, 'Costume Parisien'.

The evening dress is shown from the front and the back. The woman's hair is decorated with a pleat and velvet bows and there is a butterfly-shaped fastening on her neck tie. The 'gigot' or leg-of-mutton dress sleeves are very full at the sleeve head.

The size of the fashion plate was determined by the size of the magazine in which it appeared. The smaller, octavo-sized (23 cm x 15 cm) magazines from this time were often bound in volumes thus making it possible for the fashion plates to survive.
