Fashion plate, from Le Journal des Dames et des Modes

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from Le Journal des Dames et des Modes, a ladies' magazine published in Paris. Dating from 1826, the plate illustrates women's wear from a series entitled, 'Costume Parisien'.

The silk tartan dress is covered by a cashmir cloak. The velvet beret is decorated with silk fringes and tassels.

Towards the end of the 18th century, the first fashion magazines began appearing in Europe. Le Journal des Dames et des Modes was one which survived and ran from 1797 to 1839, most of the time under the editorship of Pierre de la Mésangère, a former priest.
