Fashion plate, from Le Journal des Dames et des Modes

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from Le Journal des Dames et des Modes, a ladies' magazine published in Paris. Dating from 1823, the plate illustrates a woman's dress from a series entitled, 'Costume Parisien'.

The dress and hat are of 'gros de Naples' - an Italian silk with a corded surface. The dress is trimmed with ribbon puffs and has sleeves of organdy - a very sheer crisp cotton fabric.

Towards the end of the 18th century, the first fashion magazines began appearing in Europe. Le Journal des Dames et des Modes was one which survived and ran from 1797 to 1839, most of the time under the editorship of Pierre de la Mésangère, a former priest.
