Fashion plate, from Le Journal des Dames et des Modes

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from Le Journal des Dames et des Modes, a ladies' magazine published in Paris. Dating from 1823, the plate illustrates a woman's dress from a series entitled, 'Costume Parisien'.

The dress is made from barège - a very fine material, generally of silk and wool, with silk thrown to the surface giving the fabric a silky, foamy texture.

Towards the end of the 18th century, the first fashion magazines began appearing in England, France and Germany. Many were short lived but Le Journal des Dames et des Modes was one of the survivors and ran from 1797 to 1839.
