This hand-coloured fashion plate is from Le Journal des Dames et des Modes, a ladies' magazine published in Paris. Dating from 1822. the plates illustrates a day dress from a series entitled, 'Costume Parisien'.

The gauze hat is decorated with satin ribbons. The dress is of merino wool, trimmed with satin ties.

Towards the end of the 18th century, the first fashion magazines began appearing in England, France and Germany. Many were short lived but Le Journal des Dames et des Modes was one of the survivors and ran from 1797 to 1839.
