Fashion plate, from Le Journal des Dames et des Modes
Add to album

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from Le Journal des Dames et des Modes, a ladies' magazine published in Paris. Dating from 1819, the plate illustrates a wedding dress from a series entitled, 'Costume Parisien'.

The dress is of Italian watered silk, trimmed around the hem with bouquets of orange tree flowers.

It was only during the neoclassical period (around 1755-1805) that the colour white became customary for weddings. By the 1830s, it was essential and was a visual declaration of the bride's purity.
