Fashion plate, from Le Journal des Dames et des Modes

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from Le Journal des Dames et des Modes, a ladies' magazine published in Paris. Dating from 1818 the plate illustrates six hats of various types from a series entitled, 'Costume Parisien'.

Included in the plate are cotton bonnets trimmed with muslin and an example, (centre left), of a bonnet made of 'Gros de Naples' - an Italian silk with a corded surface.

The very early 19th century fashion plates were usually roughly drawn, had only one or two figures and no backgrounds. Also there was a rage for plain white garments at the time with little or no ornamentation.
