Fashion plate, from Le Journal des Dames et des Modes

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from Le Journal des Dames et des Modes, a ladies' magazine published in Paris. Dating from 1816, the plate illustrates six hats of various types from a series entitled, 'Costume Parisien'.

Included in the plate are straw hats, cotton bonnets and an example, (bottom left), of a bonnet made of 'Gros de Naples' - an Italian silk with a corded surface.

Towards the end of the 18th century, the first fashion magazines began appearing in England, France and Germany. Many were short lived but Le Journal des Dames et des Modes was one of the survivors and ran from 1797 to 1839.
