Fashion plate, from Le Journal des Dames et des Modes

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from Le Journal des Dames et des Modes, a ladies' magazine published in Paris. The plate dates from 1814 and illustrates a gentleman in morning dress from a series entitled, 'Costume Parisien'.

The wide full skirts of 18th century men's coats were not convenient for riding. To overcome this, they were either tapered at the front (like a morning coat) or a square slice was cut out just below the waist, as in this example.

Le Journal des Dames et des Modes ran from 1797 to 1839, most of the time under the editorship of Pierre de la Mésangère, a former priest. Several of the plates were for gentlemen's fashions.
