Fashion plate, from La Belle Assembleé

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from La Belle Assembleé, a ladies' monthly magazine published in London. The plate illustrates an evening dress and a ball dress. It appeared in issue no 39 of the New Series on 1 March, 1828.

To protect them from being crushed by heavy fur-trimmed pelisses, the large puffed sleeves were stiffened with padding and buckram (a coarse cloth stiffened with glue). They could also be made to keep their shape by inserting small cushions.

Founded in 1806 by John Bell, La Belle Assembleé contained articles on cooking, painting and needlework. It also reported on events in the literary, musical and artistic world. It remained in publication until 1869.
