Light fitting, designed by Charles Rennie MacKintosh

This sheet metal light fitting was designed in 1902 by Charles Rennie MacKintosh. It is taken from a house in Kingsborough Gardens in Glasgow, where it was used as a hall light.

The fitting was suspended on four chains and is in the form of a cube with pierced sides with coloured glass panels. The panels have an abstract, art-nouveau style plant and flower design.

In 1901, Charles Rennie Macintosh entered a German competition to design a 'Haus fur eines Kunstfreunde' - 'House for an Art-lover'. His design was realised in Glasgow in 1990 when, as part of the European City of Culture celebrations, his 'House for an Art-lover' was built in the city's Bellahouston Park. Copies of this light fitting are used in the house.
