This earthenware dinner plate was made in the mid 19th century by John Thomson of Annfield Pottery in the Gallowgate in Glasgow. The pattern is 'Lahore'.

The plate has been transfer-printed with an oriental scene consisting of a man and a woman in front of a lake with a pagoda, boat and trees in the background.

By the middle of the 19th century, the area of Glasgow and the Clyde basin was undoubtedly the heartland of the Scottish pottery industry, with several big firms like J & M P Bell. Annfield Pottery operated from about 1816 to 1887.
