Bead or finger ring bezel (base)
Add to album

This ancient Egyptian gold bead or bezel from a finger ring possibly dates from the 3rd Intermediate Period, 25th Dynasty (between 780 and 656 BC). This picture shows the base of the bead or bezel.

The bead or bezel was made of gold foil pressed into a mould with a base-plate soldered on. The base shows a sphinx recumbent above two cartouches (ovals which contained names), here with illegible signs.

The sphinx was a mythological creature with a lion body and human head, symbolising power and royalty. It was portrayed in Egyptian art on small objects such as this one, as well as on large monumental sculptures.
