This transfer-printed earthenware soup plate was made by John Thomson & Sons of Annfield Pottery in Glasgow's Gallowgate. It was exported to South East Asia and dates from the second half of the 19th century. It was collected in Surabaya in Java in 1992.

The plate has a blue 'Chinese' printed pattern, similar to the willow pattern. A series of variations on the willow pattern were produced, but the pattern traditionally included elements such as a river, a bridge, a pagoda and a willow tree.

This plate is one in an extensive collection of Scottish plates found in the bazaars and markets of Java, Sumatra and Borneo, areas for which they were undoubtedly produced.
