Side plate

This transfer-printed earthenware side plate was made for export to South East Asia, by the Glasgow potters, J. & M.P. Bell & Co. Ltd. The pattern is called 'KEELIN HONG' and was registered in 1889.

The centre shows a dragon and an exotic bird with large feathers. The border pattern consists of four frames filled with octopus-like tentacles. The frames are separated by a scale pattern.

Bells started exporting by the 1860s. Their trade with South East Asia was particularly important.
