This pewter measure for a gill dates from the first half of the 19th century. It has a flat lid and a 'shell' thumb-piece.

Pewter gill measure of tappit hen form with a flat lid and shell thumb-piece, Scottish, first half of the 19th century

Pewter was commonly used for measures and drinking vessels as it was both fairly cheap and strong enough to stand up to to the rigours of tavern life.
