Measure

This pot-bellied pewter measure for an Imperial gill was made in the early 19th century, possibly in Edinburgh.

The measure has a loop handle and no lid. It is stamped 'GILL', and has the verification mark of a crowned 'E.R.' and the number '568'.

Measures such as these were tested initially by the Dean of Guild of the city to verify that they were correct. Once they had passed the test they were stamped with a verification mark.
