This pewter measure for an Imperial half pint was made in the 19th century by James Moyes, a pewterer based in Edinburgh's West Bow. Moyes was operational until the late 19th century and was the last pewterer to practise his trade in Edinburgh.

The measure has an S-shaped handle and a curved 'shell' thumb-piece and lid.

Pewter was commonly used for measures and drinking vessels as it was both fairly cheap and strong enough to stand up to to the rigours of tavern life.
