Measure

This pewter measure for an Imperial half pint dates from the late 18th century. It is pear-shaped and has an S-shaped handle and an Aberdeen verification mark.

Pear-shaped pewter measure with an S-handle for a half pint Imperial, lid and thumb-piece missing, mark on lip, Aberdeen, late 18th century

Pewter was commonly used for measures and drinking vessels as it was both fairly cheap and strong enough to stand up to to the rigours of tavern life.
