This Scots pot-bellied measure for a 'chopin' (half a Scots pint) dates from the second half of the 17th century. Made of pewter, it is an Aberdeenshire-type of measure, with a strap handle and no lid.

Pot-bellied pewter chopin measure, lidless type, with a strap handle carrying the maker's mark inverted, a thistle head over initials "S.I.", Aberdeenshire type, 1650 - 1700

Pewter was commonly used for measures and drinking vessels as it was both fairly cheap and strong enough to stand up to to the rigours of tavern life.
