Measure

This pewter measure for a half-gill dates was made in the late 18th century, probably in Edinburgh.

The baluster measure has a lid with a ball. On the handle is 'RB', the unrecorded maker's mark. The base is engraved 'B Gavine', probably the name of an owner.

Pewter was commonly used for measures and drinking vessels as it was both fairly cheap and strong enough to stand up to to the rigours of tavern life.
