Jug (base)
Add to album

This base of a medieval earthenware jug was trawled up between Tumpan Head and Chicken Head near Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis by the trawler, 'Misty Isle'.

The cylindrical ribbed vessel has decorative horizontal grooves and a pie-crust base. Although it is very worn, there are traces of lead glazing.

At the end of the 19th century, Stornoway was the centre of one of the largest Scottish fishery districts covering the whole of the Outer Hebrides. In 1893 the district contained over one thousand fishing boats of various class, employing over 4500 men and boys.
