Seal matrix
Add to album

This bronze seal matrix was found in the field containing the ruins of Kilspindie Castle in Aberlady in East Lothian. It dates from the 17th or 18th century and would have been used to seal private letters.

The matrix has a stalk handle and an oval face cut with the letter, 'R.'

Seals were usually made of beeswax, softened by heat and attached to a document. A mould or matrix was used to make the impression in soft wax.
