Bowl

This cream glazed earthenware bowl was probably made by Rathbone's Pottery at Portobello in Midlothian. It dates from around 1815 and is inscribed, 'Waterloo', a reference to the battle of Waterloo which took place in that year.

Underneath the inscription is a painted Highland military bonnet.

From 1750 onwards large scale potteries began to appear along the Firth of Forth coastline. Individual factories' fortunes fluctuated over the years but the area remained a significant centre until the 1930s. The last pottery in Portobello moved out only in the early 1970s.
