Door hinge plate
Add to album

This metal door hinge plate was made by the Edinburgh ironworks firm of Thomas Hadden. It dates from the late 19th or early 20th century.

The black painted plate is formed with a decorative fleur-de-lis at one end and a plain square at the other. The letters 'ER' are incorporated into an openwork circle in the centre of the plate.

In the late 19th and early 20th century, Scottish firms such as Haddens underwent a revival due to increasing interest in Scottish styles and workmanship of wrought iron. This tradition had declined earlier in the 19th century due to mass production of cheaper cast iron.
