This chair is an example of the so-called 'Edinburgh pattern'. The characteristics of this pattern were drop-turned arms, a yoke-shaped top rail, a single thin stay rail at the back, turned front legs and swept back rear legs.

This chair has been painted several times making identification of the timber difficult. It has also been cut down slightly at the legs.

Edinburgh pattern chairs were mass-produced during the latter half of the 19th century. Many of the stylistic features are derived from fashionable chairs of the first quarter of the 19th century.
