Microscope (detail)
Add to album

This is a detail of the body of an early compound microscope made around 1715, probably by John Marshall (1659-1722), a scientific instrument maker based in London.

The detail shows the signature 'I.MARSHALL' which has been stamped on on the green leather of the instrument's single draw. The name is framed in gold-impressed tooled motives.

The leather-covered tubes are stamped with gold tooling, a contemporary book-binding decoration characteristic of London optical instruments of this period.
