Sculptured stone (cast)

This picture shows a cast of a sculptured stone from the island of Inchcolm in the Firth of Forth in Fife. The original was carved sometime in the 10th century.

This face of the stone was carved with a diagonal key pattern in deep relief. The stone is broken on the top.

Inchcolm Abbey was founded around 1153. However, this stone and a hogback slab show a Christian presence before then. Later traditions also support the idea of an earlier Christian establishment, the exact nature of which cannot be determined.
