Cup

This sandstone cup was found in a broch at Bowermadden in Caithness. It is an example of a simple vessel made from locally available materials sometime between 200 BC and 200 AD.

Oval cup of red sandstone, found in a broch at Bowermadden, Caithness, 200 BC - 200 AD

Brochs were generally made of two concentric dry stone walls which had stairs within them leading to galleries at upper levels. The central area was either roofed or left open. Excavations at a number of brochs have recovered a range of domestic artefacts.
