This bronze penannular brooch was found at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It dates from between 80 and 180 AD. This picture shows the front of the brooch.

The small brooch has knob-shaped terminals which have been decorated with fluting. The pin is wound round the brooch, and bent to give it a considerable curve where it crosses the hoop.

Brooches were used to fasten clothing, and are frequently found on Roman sites. Penannular brooches are relatively common, ranging from simple to more elaborate examples. Many, like this one, are quite small.
