This iron hoe was found at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It was used between 80 and 180 AD.

The broad blade of the hoe was used for digging and the narrower end as a pick. Some of the blade is missing, but otherwise it is complete, although much worn.

Various agricultural implements, including scythes, sickles, rakes and hoes were found at the Roman fort of Newstead, suggesting that some cultivation occurred near the site.
