Add to album

This piece of a bronze knife was found at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It was used between 80 and 180 AD.

The handle and part of the blade survive, with a decorative mount at the base of the blade. There is a gap in the handle, presumably where an organic component fitted.

Knives in a range of shapes, sizes and material were found at Newstead. They would have been essential items for soldiers, used for a variety of purposes.
